EU renews sanctions against Myanmar

Associated Press - April 27, 2009

Constant Brand, Luxembourg – EU foreign ministers have extended sanctions against Myanmar for another year to push for democratic change.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says people in Myanmar are "looking forward" to planned constitutional reform.

The EU ministers endorsed a plan at talks Monday to keep in place for another year a travel ban on senior political officials, an arms embargo and a freeze of Myanmar assets in Europe.

They also renewed calls for the release of Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners.

The EU sanctions were put in place in 2006 to protest the junta's crackdown on pro-democracy groups. The EU added other economic sanctions in 2007.
