Workers occupy HI traffic circle, march to Bung Karno sports complex

Jakarta Post - May 1, 2012

Jakarta – Thousands of workers rallying to celebrate May Day on Tuesday brought traffic at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle on Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta to a standstill.

The workers occupied all roads leading to the circle as they got ready to march to the Bung Karno sports complex (GBK). The only traffic allowed through were buses carrying thousands of demonstrators from across the nation.

Chairman of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI), Said Iqbal, said that there would be at least 100,000 workers at the rally. Aside from the KSPI, there were also expected to be workers from the Confederation of the All-Indonesian Workers' Union (KSPSI) and the Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers' Union (FPSMI).

Labor representatives called on the government to guarantee pensions and social security, and to revise its low-wage policies. They also demanded the government scrap the practice of outsourcing.

As of 11:00 a.m., protesters had begun marching toward the Bung Karno sports stadium. (png)
